Hyacintglasses (Hyacinth Glasses)
Printed Cotton Panel
by Arne Jacobsen for Grautex Fabrics

Danish, ca. 1950

Primarily recognized for his innovative tubular steel and bent plywood furnishings and stainless steel housewares, Danish industrial designer and architect Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) produced series of unusual textile designs during the 1940s and 1950s, first for Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm and later for the Danish firm Grautex Fabrics. In their subject matter, his textile patterns maintain a closeness to nature that complement his architectural work. Here, in an overall motif combining architecture, interior design, and the outdoors, rows of glass vases appear stacked on shelves. Some are empty, while others contain sprays of hyacinths as well as bulbs still waiting to blossom.
