Cotton Patchwork and Appliqué Panel
Chinese Minority (Miao, Dunaco sub-tribe)
early 20th century

Rustic yet refined, this patchwork panel is composed of individual appliqué squares made of indigo-dyed and natural colored cotton, surrounded with a wide border of dark indigo blue cotton. The squares are carefully arranged in a repeating pattern T-shapes, many of which are embroidered with dark-indigo foliate motifs and pale gold border details. Known for their proficiency in embroidery, the Miao people often use this type of textile as a bedcover, but also for voluminous skirts.
