Painted-and-Dyed Cotton Panel
Indian Export, 18th century

This chintz panel has an appealingly dense, large-scale symmetrical pattern of exotic florals rendered in rich shades of red and blue. In the center, stylized flowers and palmettes are surrounded by scrolls with lobed, leafy edges; at either side are lush flowering vases, some with serrated, patterned leaves and boteh shapes with floral fillings. The bottom edge of the panel was finished with a border of motifs related to the main field, indicating that this was originally part of a larger palampore or bed cover. Conservation mounted on stretcher.
