An overflowing basket of stylized carnations and zinnias is created by a remarkable appliqué technique. Hundreds of separately dyed pieces of petal-shaped wool, in ombré shadings and gradated vibrant colors, are carefully arranged against a cream-colored twill ground to produce a bold, three-dimensional design. Colored silk threads outline the delicate tracery of veining on the leaves, while the densely filled centers of many flowers are exectued in textural French knots. The embroiderer's imaginative use of materials results in an ebullient floral display. One of a coordinating pair; framed and conservation mounted.
