Hull Traders, a British textile company founded in 1957, excelled
in producing hand-screen-printed designs with an emphasis on textural
effects. Queen of Spain, designed by Michael Taylor in 1963,
demonstrates Hull Trader's skill with pigment dyes—this type
of dye stuff imparted distinctive finishes
to the fabric surface. Clustered together in varying densities against
a crisp white ground, the black, feather-like motifs display
some occasional mottling and rough edges that mimic brush strokes.
The choice of motif and execution highlight Taylor's artistry. Queen of Spain won a Cotton Board Award in 1964.
This design, in two alternate colorways, is illustrated in Lesley
Jackson, Twentieth-Century Pattern Design (2002), p.7.
