Metallic Needlework Picture
English, mid-17th c.

Embroidered Satin Picture

This charming embroidered scene of a central flowering urn flanked by a stag, a leopard, scrolling foliage and flowers, and crested birds, was most likely once a panel belonging to a needlework casket. The golden olive satin ground is mostly embroidered in metallic purl and metallic wrapped threads in gold, silver, with some touches of blue, green and red. The raised work motifs are sculpturally padded for a dimensional effect; the leopard and stag are worked in couched metallic thread, and the exotic bird in the top right corner has a crenellated metal strip tail that also incorporates filaments from real peacock feathers.
