Pair of Needlework Panels from a Sweet Meat Purse
British, ca. 1600

These delicate panels were originally part of a sweet meat purse. Sweet meat purses were often filled with fragrant herbs and given as precious gifts. Each panel is worked in polychrome silk and silver metallic thread; the stylized floral motifs, which surround birds and a rabbit, are typical of Elizabethan embroidery.
